2011 Chitral cross-border attacks

In late August 2011, about 300 Taliban fighters crossed from Afghanistan into Pakistan’s Chitral district and attacked border posts at Arandu, across from Nuristan province in Afghanistan. The assault began around dawn and continued for most of the day. Pakistani security forces suffered heavy casualties, with around 26 soldiers and 10 policemen killed. About 25 militants were reported killed, though some tallies put Pakistani military deaths higher (around 32–36). The attack worsened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan formally protested to the Afghan government and urged ISAF and the Afghan Army to prevent future incursions and improve border security.
