2008 Saint John River flood

The 2008 Saint John River flood was the worst flooding along the Saint John River in about 35 years. In Fredericton, water rose to 27 feet 4 inches on May 1, nearly matching the 1973 record of 28 feet 3 inches.

The flood happened because a record amount of snow from the previous winter (2007–2008) melted quickly, along with heavy spring rains.

In Fredericton, about 50 streets were closed as floodwaters moved through the city. The flooding also damaged bridges and hundreds of homes and buildings in northern Maine and western New Brunswick.

By May 3, the Canadian Red Cross had registered 680 residents evacuated in Canada, and about 600 more residences were evacuated in Maine.

The damage was estimated at 11.9 million Canadian dollars.

Areas affected included Edmundston, Fredericton and Maugerville in New Brunswick, and Fort Kent, Madawaska and Van Buren in Maine.

The event lasted from April to May 2008.
