Because of its rich culture, it is often called "Babu Kolkata." The area is known for old heritage buildings and temples, such as Sovabazar Rajbari. North Kolkata hosts main campuses of several universities, including the University of Calcutta, Presidency University, The Sanskrit College and University, and Rabindra Bharati University.
Historically, North Kolkata was the village of Sutanuti, along with Gobindapur and Kalikata. These areas, together with central and southern Kolkata, formed the capital of British India until 1911.
