2007 Iraqi Parliament bombing
2007 Iraqi Parliament bombing
On 12 April 2007, a suicide bomber attacked the canteen inside the Iraqi Parliament building in Baghdad’s Green Zone. The blast happened about ten minutes after lawmakers had adjourned for lunch, on the first floor of the Baghdad Convention Center where Parliament meets. The attack killed at least one person and wounded many others; early reports varied, with some saying up to eight people died. Two additional suicide vests were found nearby.
After the attack, security measures were increased, including a brief shutdown of mobile phone networks and helicopters flying overhead. The Islamic State of Iraq later claimed responsibility for the attack, but this claim was not proven.
In the days following, MPs called for stronger security. The incident raised serious concerns about safety in Baghdad. U.S. President George W. Bush condemned the bombing, stressing that democracy can be a target for violence. The attack contributed to ongoing political tensions and security challenges in the Iraqi capital.
