2006 Brazilian Grand Prix
The 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix was the last race of the 2006 Formula One World Championship. It took place on 22 October at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo, Brazil. The 71-lap race covered about 305.9 km, under warm conditions.
Pole position went to Felipe Massa of Ferrari, who also won the race. Fernando Alonso finished second for Renault, and Jenson Button was third for Honda. Michael Schumacher, starting from 10th, had a puncture early on and finished fourth; he would retire from Formula One after this season (returning later in 2010).
The race helped decide the championships: Fernando Alonso and Renault won the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles for 2006. Massa’s victory made him the first Brazilian to win his home race in São Paulo since Ayrton Senna in 1993.
Notable moments included a safety car after an incident involving Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber, and a dramatic late battle as Schumacher closed in on the leaders but could not overtake Alonso and Button. The event also marked the end of the tire war, as Michelin left the sport after the race, and it signaled the end of two major tobacco sponsorships.
