During the 2004–05 season, Preston North End competed in the English Football League Championship. The club's chairman was Derek Shaw. The season began with Craig Brown as manager, but after a 1–0 defeat at Brighton on 28 August 2004 (a Marlon Broomes own goal), Brown was sacked the next day and Billy Davies took over as manager from 29 August.

Playing home games at Deepdale, Preston finished 5th in the Championship and reached the third round in both the FA Cup and the League Cup. The club's top scorer was Richard Cresswell with 16 league goals (21 in all competitions). The average home league attendance was 12,841.

Davies led Preston to the 2005 play-off final in Cardiff, but they lost 1–0 to West Ham United.
