2001–02 Golden State Warriors season
The 2001–02 season was the Warriors’ 56th in the NBA and 40th in the San Francisco Bay Area. They drafted Jason Richardson (5th), Troy Murphy (14th), and Gilbert Arenas (31st) in the 2001 NBA draft to help rebuild. The team started 5–3, but then struggled, losing 12 of their next 15 games. Head coach Dave Cowens was fired after an 8–15 start and was replaced by Brian Winters. Midseason, center Marc Jackson was traded to Minnesota for Dean Garrett. The Warriors endured a 10-game losing streak in March and finished last in the Pacific Division at 21–61, tied for the league’s worst record, and missed the playoffs for the eighth straight year.
