Port Vale beat Brentford 2-1 to win the 2001 LDV Vans Trophy final

The 2001 Football League Trophy final, also known as the LDV Vans Trophy, was played on 22 April 2001 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The match was the final of the competition for third and fourth-tier clubs, held at the Millennium Stadium because Wembley Stadium was being rebuilt.

Port Vale and Brentford had each fought through five knockout rounds to reach the final, Vale coming from the north and Brentford from the south. Vale’s route included victories over Notts County, Chester City, Darlington, a golden-goal win over Stoke City, and Lincoln City. Brentford beat Oxford United, then beat Brighton & Hove Albion on penalties, followed by Barnet, Swansea City, and Southend United on the way to the final.

In Cardiff, Brentford took the lead early through Michael Dobson in the third minute. Port Vale levelled in the 76th minute when Marc Bridge-Wilkinson converted a penalty after a foul on Tony Naylor, and seven minutes later Steve Brooker put Vale in front. Vale held on to win 2-1. Dave Brammer was named Man of the Match. The attendance was 25,654 and the weather was rainy.
