1985 Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election
1985 Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections were held to elect all 68 seats in the state assembly. A majority requires 35 seats. The Indian National Congress (INC), led by Virbhadra Singh, won a large victory by taking 58 seats with 55.86% of the popular vote. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Shanta Kumar, won 7 seats with 35.87% of the vote. The INC gained 27 seats and the BJP gained 22 seats compared with the previous election. Virbhadra Singh, who was chief minister before the elections, remained chief minister after the elections. As of 2022, this is the last time an incumbent party in Himachal Pradesh retained control of the legislative assembly.
