1975 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
1975 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp
The race was held at Longchamp Racecourse on Sunday, October 5, 1975. It was the 54th running of Europe's biggest horse race.
Winner and top facts
Star Appeal, a five-year-old trained in West Germany by Theo Grieper and ridden by Greville Starkey, won the Arc for owner Waldemar Zeitelhack. It was their first Arc win for all of them, and Star Appeal became the first German-trained horse to win the race. He started at odds of 119/1, the longest price ever for a winner.
The field and betting
In French racing, horses with the same owner are usually added together for betting. The favourite was Allez France, who had won the Arc in 1974. Other leading French contenders included Ivanjica and Green Dancer, both owned by Jacques Wertheimer and trained by Alec Head. International challengers included Bruni from Britain and the Italian Duke of Marmalade, with Dahlia and Nobiliary representing the United States. Star Appeal was a long shot at 119/1.
Race summary
Citoyen led early with Olmeto second. Nobiliary, Dahlia, Carolus, Un Kopeck and Allez France were also prominent early. At halfway the pace quickened and there was some bumping. Dahlia stumbled and Allez France lost ground. Nobiliary led into the straight, ahead of Un Kopeck, Kasteel, Bruni and Duke of Marmalade. Comtesse de Loir made a strong run along the rail to challenge Nobiliary, but Star Appeal came through in the final stages and won by three lengths. On My Way finished second, with Comtesse de Loir third, followed by Un Kopeck, Allez France, Nobiliary, Bruni and Green Dancer.
