1971 Yemen Arab Republic parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in the Yemen Arab Republic in February and March 1971. With political parties banned, all candidates stood as independents. Rural areas used indirect elections, while urban areas used secret, direct elections, effectively barring women from voting. The result was a Parliament dominated by tribal elites. The 159-seat parliament consisted of 128 members elected from single-member constituencies and 31 appointed by the President. The parliament was suspended in 1974 after a military coup to curb the power of the elites.
