1968 Rugby League World Cup

The fourth Rugby League World Cup took place from 25 May to 10 June 1968. For the first time, the tournament was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with four teams competing: Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and France.

Australia won the title, beating France 20–2 in the final at the Sydney Cricket Ground, in front of 54,290 fans. It was Australia’s second World Cup win. The final was planned in advance, a new feature for the event, and the tournament used the four-tackle rule for the first time.

A record crowd of 62,256 watched Great Britain play Australia earlier in the tournament, a figure that stood as a World Cup attendance high until 1992. In total, seven matches were played, with 220,683 spectators (about 31,526 per game) and 227 points scored (about 32.4 per game).

Eric Simms was the top scorer with 56 points (25 goals). The leading try-scorers were Lionel Williamson, Ron Coote, and Clive Sullivan, each with four tries.
