Manchester United's 1960–61 season was their 59th in the Football League and 16th consecutive in the top division. Managed by Matt Busby and chaired by Harold Hardman, the team finished 7th in the First Division. In cup competitions, they reached the Fourth Round of the FA Cup and the Second Round of the League Cup, which was United's first season in this new competition. Bobby Charlton was the club's top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions (all 21 in the league as well). The highest home attendance was 65,295 for the match against Tottenham Hotspur on 16 January 1961, the lowest was 15,662 against Exeter City on 26 October 1960, and the average home league attendance was 38,501.
