Background
- Hungary, coached by Gusztáv Sebes, were the world’s No.1 team and Olympic champions.
- England, proud of their football heritage, were seen as technically capable but culturally slow to change.
- This was a return match after Hungary’s 6–3 win at Wembley in 1953. England hoped to recover, but Hungary’s tactics and fitness proved superior.
Teams and tactics
- Hungary used a 4-2-4 system with players like Ferenc Puskás and Sándor Kocsis up front, Nándor Hidegkuti dropping into midfield, and József Bozsik dictating play.
- England used the old WM formation. Captain Billy Wright led the team; notable players included Gil Merrick, Tom Finney, Ivor Broadis, and Bedford Jezzard making his England debut.
What happened
- Hungary dominated the game from the start. Lantos opened the scoring after 10 minutes; Puskás added a second at 17 minutes; Kocsis made it 3–0 at 19 minutes.
- In the second half, Kocsis scored again at 57 minutes, Hidegkuti added a goal at 59 minutes, Tóth made it 6–0 at 69 minutes, and Puskás completed the scoring at 71 minutes.
- England’s consolation came when Broadis scored during the heavy Hungarian lead.
Aftermath
- This remains England’s heaviest defeat. The result showed England were no longer the top team and highlighted the need to adopt modern European tactics and training.
