The 1948–49 season was Birmingham City’s 46th in the Football League and 27th in the First Division, having been promoted as Second Division champions in 1947–48. They finished 17th in the 22-team division, and they both scored the fewest goals and conceded the fewest in the league.

In the FA Cup, Birmingham entered at the third round and were knocked out by Leicester City after two replays.
