1948 Philadelphia Eagles season
The 1948 Philadelphia Eagles season was the team’s 16th in the NFL. Led by owner Lex Thompson and coach Earle “Greasy” Neale, the Eagles played at Shibe Park and finished with a 9–2–1 record. They repeated as Eastern Division champions and went on to win the NFL Championship, defeating the Chicago Cardinals 7–0 in a snowbound game at Shibe Park for their first NFL title.
The Eagles trained in Saranac Lake, New York, at a camp known as the Eagles Nest. During the season they had three 45–0 victories and, notably, earned their first-ever win over the Bears, snapping a long losing streak against them.
In the championship game, Steve Van Buren scored the deciding touchdown in the fourth quarter after a fumble recovery. The game drew about 36,300 paid spectators. This victory marked the Cardinals’ last NFL Championship appearance in the 20th century.
