1944 United States presidential election in Virginia
On November 7, 1944, Virginia voters chose 11 electors to the Electoral College. The Democratic incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Republican Thomas E. Dewey in Virginia, earning 242,276 votes (62.36%) to 145,243 votes (37.39%), and all 11 of Virginia’s electoral votes went to Roosevelt.
Nationally, Roosevelt won the presidency with about 53.39% of the vote.
This was the last time Virginia voted for a Democratic candidate by a double-digit margin until 2020. It was also the last time Augusta, Mathews, Northumberland, Richmond, and Roanoke counties voted for a Democratic presidential nominee. The independent city of Staunton did not vote Democratic again until Barack Obama in 2008.
