1939–40 Chicago Black Hawks season
The Hawks bounced back from a disastrous previous year, finishing 23–19–6 for 52 points and 4th place in the NHL to return to the playoffs. General manager Frederic McLaughlin, with Paul Thompson taking over as full-time head coach after ending his playing days as a player-coach, led the team. They played at Chicago Stadium with Johnny Gottselig as captain.
Team performance: Home 15–7–2; road 8–12–4; 112 goals for; 120 against.
Team leaders: Doug Bentley with 12 goals; Cully Dahlstrom with 19 assists and 30 points; Joe Cooper had 59 penalty minutes; Earl Seibert added 10 points.
Goaltending: Mike Karakas started 17 games before being loaned to Montreal; Paul Goodman finished with a 16–10–5 record and a 1.94 GAA.
Playoffs: Faced the Toronto Maple Leafs in a best-of-three. Toronto won 3–2 in overtime in Toronto, then 2–1 in Chicago to eliminate Chicago.
Season note: First winning season in several years and highest point total since 1934–35.
