1916 Chesterton by-election

The 1916 Chesterton by-election was held on 20 January 1916 for the Chesterton seat in Cambridgeshire. It was caused by Liberal MP Edwin Montagu being re-appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (a post he had briefly held in 1915). He also remained Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Under the rules of the time, he had to resign and recontest the seat. Montagu was re-nominated by the local Liberal Association, and because of a wartime political truce no other candidate stood against him. He was elected unopposed.
