FC Basel 1913–14 season

This was Basel’s 21st season since the club was founded on 15 November 1893. Karl Ibach was chairman at the start, but he stood down on 25 September 1913 and Carl Albert Hintermann became chairman from that date. The club’s first professional coach was Percy Humphreys, an Englishman who began his duties on 1 April 1913 after signing with Ibach. He had previously been head coach for Hartlepool United.

Basel played home games at the Landhof in Kleinbasel. They played a total of 32 matches: 14 in the Swiss Serie A and 18 friendlies. Of the friendlies, 6 were at home in the Landhof, 1 at Margarethenwiese, 5 away in Switzerland, and 5 abroad. They faced seven German teams, one English team (Bradford City), and the other 10 opponents were Swiss. In these friendlies Basel won 10 and lost 8, scoring 57 and conceding 47.

Swiss Serie A 1913–14 was divided into East, Central, and West groups; Basel were in the Central group with Old Boys, Nordstern Basel, Young Boys, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Étoile-Sporting La Chaux-de-Fonds, FC Bern, and Biel-Bienne. Basel started strong, winning seven of their first eight games, but after the winter break they lost three and finished tied for second with FC Bern, three points behind the group winners, Young Boys. In 14 league games Basel scored 63 and conceded 33. Their best results were 11–4 at home and 10–1 away against La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Young Boys advanced to the finals against Cantonal Neuchâtel and Aarau, with Aarau ultimately winning the championship in the finals. Old Boys finished last in the group but won the relegation playoff to stay up.

The Anglo-Cup was not played this year, and the competition was later discontinued due to World War I. The club’s top scorer for the season was Christian Albicker with 12 goals.
