1822 is a non-fiction history book by Laurentino Gomes about how Brazil became independent in 1822. The original Portuguese title is 1822, Como um homem sábio, uma princesa triste e um escocês louco por dinheiro ajudaram D. Pedro a criar o Brasil, um país que tinha tudo para dar errado. The book explains the events around Prince Pedro’s declaration of independence and the Cry of Ipiranga, showing how Brazil began its life as an independent nation. It follows Gomes’s earlier book 1808 and was published by Nova Fronteira in Brazil on 7 September 2010. The work has 351 pages and the ISBN 978-85-209-2409-9. It is preceded by 1808 and followed by 1889, and is dedicated to Brazilian history teachers. In 2011, it won two Jabuti Prizes: best reportage-book and non-fiction book of the year.
