1 Field Engineer Squadron
The 1 Field Engineer Squadron is a combat engineer unit in the British Army’s Corps of Royal Engineers. Today it forms part of the 21 Engineer Regiment within the 1st Strike Brigade and is based at Claro Barracks. The squadron is nicknamed Dog Sqn or 1st Field Sqn and is known for its long history of engineering support in many conflicts.
Origins go back to 1887 with the formation of the 1st Fortress Company in Bermuda. The company moved to Chatham, Cork and then Gibraltar, where it supported fortifications and bases. In WWI, the Fortress Company joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force for the Gallipoli Campaign, then moved to the Western Front in France, where it served as an Advance Park Company and later a Base Park Company. It was disbanded in 1919 and reformed in 1925 as the 1st Fortress Company based in Gibraltar, continuing to provide fortress and engineering support.
In the lead-up to and during WWII, the unit in Gibraltar ran electrical and searchlight defences and remained there throughout the war. After the war, the unit was reestablished as the 1st Field Squadron in 1948. It served across the British Army’s overseas postings and in the German Army of the Rhine area, eventually becoming part of a larger reorganised regiment.
From the 1960s to the 1990s, the squadron moved among different postings and regiments as the Army reorganised. It served in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner in the 1970s and 1980s, took part in the Falkland Islands deployments in 1984, and joined operations in the Gulf (Operation Granby) in Kuwait in 1990. The squadron also served in the Balkans—Yugoslavia in the 1990s and Kosovo in 1998 (Operation Agricola I).
In 2000 the unit was redesignated as the 1 Armoured Engineer Squadron, then in 2003 it became the 1 Field Squadron. It supported major operations in Iraq (Operation Telic V and XI) in the mid-2000s. After 2008, the 21st Engineer Regiment moved to Ripon Lines, Catterick, and later reorganisations placed the squadron under the 12th Force Support Engineer Group (now part of the 8th Engineer Brigade) as part of Army 2020 reforms.
Today, the squadron remains part of 21 Engineer Regiment, supports the 1st Strike Brigade, and is based at Claro Barracks, continuing its long tradition of providing essential engineering support on operations around the world.
