Of the City of the Saved...
Of the City of the Saved... is a science fiction novel by Philip Purser-Hallard set in the Faction Paradox universe. Laura Tobin, a character who first appeared in BBC Doctor Who books, is a major presence in the story.
The book centers on The City of the Saved, a vast metropolis beyond the end of the universe. Here every person who ever lived has been resurrected and lives for hundreds of years in a state of unaging invulnerability. But then a murder shakes this carefully balanced world.
The City has many inhabitants, including various divinities and artificial beings. It features famous figures as constructs within the City, such as Sherlock Holmes and Don Juan DeMarco, and even real people like Philip K. Dick and the Roman Emperor Claudius appear in some form.
The novel was first published in 2004 by Mad Norwegian Press and won Best Book in the 2004 Jade Pagoda awards. It has been praised as a strong Doctor Who–related original novel and described as ambitious.
Beyond this book, The City of the Saved was introduced in The Book of the War and appears in Purser-Hallard’s Obverse Books anthology A Romance in Twelve Parts. Obverse Books has published a series of City anthologies edited by Purser-Hallard since 2012.
In 2025, Obverse Books reprinted the novel with additional short stories by the author and new illustrations.
