Zhang Siying
Zhang Siying (张嗣瀛) (1925–2019) was a Chinese expert in automatic control. He was born on April 5, 5, 1925, in Zhangqiu, Shandong, and died on October 4, 2019, in Qingdao, Shandong, at age 94. He studied at Wuhan University, graduating in 1948. After 1949 he taught at Northeastern University of Technology, where he served as professor, director of the Engineering Mechanics Department, and head of the Institute of Automation. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1950 and studied automatic control at Moscow State University in 1957. He was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997. In 1999 he founded the Institute of Complexity Science at Qingdao University and led it. In 2005 he started the Complex Systems and Complexity Science program with Dai Ruwei. In 2013 he won Qingdao’s Highest Prize in Science and Technology and donated the prize money to create the Zhang Siying Outstanding Youth Paper Award for postgraduates. He died in Qingdao at age 94.
