Zhang Jindong
Zhang Jindong (born March 1963) is a Chinese entrepreneur and politician. He co-founded Suning Holdings Group and is the honorary chairman of Suning.com. He built Suning from a small air-conditioning shop in Nanjing into a large conglomerate that also includes Suning Real Estate and Suning Appliance Group. Suning.com is the listed company, while Suning Holdings Group and Suning Appliance Group are unlisted. In 2016, Suning Holdings Group bought a majority stake in Inter Milan, making the club part of his family business; his son Zhang Kangyang (Steven) later became Inter Milan’s chairman, while Zhang Jindong himself was not on the Inter board. He stepped down as chairman of Suning.com in July 2021 and became honorary chairman.
Born in Tianchang, Anhui, Zhang Jindong studied Chinese at Nanjing Normal University. He started Suning in 1990 with his older brother Zhang Guiping after they sold air-conditioning and related products on Ninghai Road in Nanjing. The Suning name comes from combining the names of road and city. His brother later left the business to focus on Suning Universal, while Zhang Jindong continued to grow Suning Real Estate and other ventures.
Public service: He has served in several national and provincial political bodies, including memberships in the All-China Youth Federation, All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress for Nanjing.
Net worth: Forbes has listed him among China’s wealthiest people, with estimates around several billion dollars in various years, including about $7.4 billion in 2021.
