ZIM (file format)
ZIM is an open file format for offline web content, defined by the openZIM project and used with the Kiwix reader. It mainly stores articles and files from Wikimedia projects. ZIM stands for “Zeno Improved,” replacing the older Zeno format. Since 2021, Zstandard compression is the default and LZMA2 (via XZ Utils) is also supported. It can compress up to about 3x, with most savings in data clusters. The openZIM project is sponsored by Wikimedia CH and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation.
