York Preparatory School
York Preparatory School, commonly called York Prep, is a private, day, college-prep school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It serves about 350 students in grades 6–12 and has a 5:1 student-teacher ratio. The school is coeducational, approved by the New York State Board of Regents, and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The head of school is Kathryn Maggiotto, who began on June 1, 2023. York Prep was founded in 1969 by Ronald and Jayme Stewart.
The curriculum covers core liberal arts subjects plus a wide range of electives. The school uses a tracking system that places students in ability groups, allowing advanced work in Honors and the Scholars programs while providing more support where needed. There is a Jump Start program for students who learn differently, offered at an additional cost.
York Prep operates on a semester system. Grades start in 6th grade and are reported quarterly, with families able to view progress online through Canvas. The school uses GPA-based honors programs, with distinctions for high achievements.
In 1997, York Prep moved to a new campus after a property swap with Ramaz School. The West 68th Street campus is a seven-story building with three science laboratories, three technology centers, a library, performance and art studios, and a gym with a fitness center and locker rooms. The original site on East 85th Street was the former home of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion.
York Prep’s colors are blue and yellow, and the mascot is the Panthers. The school’s newspaper is The Paw and the yearbook is The Legend. Tuition was around $64,000 for the 2024–25 school year.
