William Sledd
William Sledd (born October 11, 1983) is an American internet personality and early YouTube star from Paducah, Kentucky. He became famous for "Ask A Gay Man," a fashion-focused video blog launched in 2006, making him one of YouTube’s first big celebrities. Self-taught, he used an iMac to create four-to-five minute videos about fashion roughly every two weeks, often sharing tips and “don’ts.” His denim edition video became his most viewed, with millions of views. He is openly gay and has told his audience that he hopes to inspire young LGBTQ+ viewers.
His online popularity drew coverage from fashion media and he appeared on TV shows like Rachael Ray and Tyra Banks. He worked with other YouTubers on projects such as "The Top (& Bottom) Gays of YouTube!" and was among the most-subscribed creators in the late 2000s. In 2007 he won the Flamingo Award for Best Video Blog for the Denim Edition. In 2006 his account was hacked, but he recovered by re-uploading videos.
Sledd explored traditional media opportunities; Bravo offered him a series based on Ask a Gay Man and he shot pilots for a reality show before Bravo redirected its focus. He later worked as a social media manager, including for a bank. He married Tom Maher in 2022. He remains a notable figure from the early days of YouTube fashion and LGBTQ+ online communities.
