William Abraham (bishop)
William Abraham (1792–13 January 1837) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Waterford and Lismore from 1830 until his death. Born in Glendine, County Cork, to Henry Abraham and Margaret Broderick, he grew up in Headborough, County Waterford. He studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, and after ordination taught at St John’s College, Waterford. In 1830 he was named bishop and was consecrated on 21 March 1830. Under his leadership Mount Melleray Abbey was founded in 1833. Abraham was unpopular with Irish nationalists and some Catholic clergy, seen as favoring British government policy on various issues, and he even voted for the anti-Catholic emancipation candidate in the Stuarts Election. He died on 13 January 1837 in Waterford and was buried in Holy Trinity Chapel, Waterford. He was succeeded by Nicholas Foran.
