White Train
White Train was the nickname for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Weapons Transport Train. It moved nuclear weapons for most of the Cold War, from 1951 to 1987, transporting them from the Pantex plant in the Texas Panhandle. The armored train had defensive weapons and drew peace and anti-nuclear activism in the West. Its color was changed many times to avoid notice, but people still called it the White Train.
After the last attempt to prosecute protesters who blocked the train failed, the Department of Energy began moving weapons by truck without public notice. Some White Train cars are preserved at the Amarillo Railroad Museum, and a few are kept at the Pantex Plant.
