Whirlwind Peak
Whirlwind Peak is a mountain in Garibaldi Provincial Park, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It sits in the Fitzsimmons Range of the Coast Mountains and rises to 2,427 metres (7,963 feet). The peak is the eighth-highest in the Fitzsimmons Range and climbs steeply from the surrounding terrain, rising about 1,525 metres (5,003 feet) above the nearby river within 2.5 kilometres.
The mountain lies about 14 kilometres southeast of Whistler. Its north slope features the Overlord Glacier. Water from the peak drains into streams that feed the Cheakamus River. The nearest higher peak is Refuse Pinnacle, roughly 0.9 kilometres to the east-northeast.
Whirlwind Peak was named by the Garibaldi Park Board after evidence of a windstorm that leveled trees on its slopes; the name was officially adopted on September 2, 1930.
The first ascent was in 1923 by Neal Carter and Charles Townsend. The easiest way to reach the summit is class 2 scrambling.
Climate is marine west coast, with fronts from the Pacific bringing heavy rain or snow, especially in winter. Winter temperatures can drop below −20 °C, with wind chills under −30 °C. The best time for climbing is July through September.
