Where Have You Been (All My Life)

Where Have You Been (All My Life) is a soul-pop song written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. It was first released in 1962 by Arthur Alexander on Dot Records, with Soldier of Love (Lay Down Your Arms) as the B-side. In the UK, London Records released it. The single is 2 minutes and 43 seconds long and was produced by Noel Ball (uncredited). It reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 17 on the R&B chart.

Arthur Alexander’s version is described as a classic example of 1960s pop songwriting that captures the thrill of first love. Billboard praised Alexander’s vocal performance, and biographer Richard Younger noted the maturity of its melody and mood.

Covers and other versions:
- The Beatles performed both Where Have You Been (All My Life) and Soldier of Love live early in their career; a bootleg recording from 31 December 1962 at the Star Club in Hamburg features John Lennon on lead vocal.
- Gene Vincent (Columbia Records) and Gerry and the Pacemakers (Laurie) also recorded the song.
- The Searchers recorded it for their 1964 LP It’s The Searchers (Pye Records).
- Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders included it on their 1964 album, with the song appearing as a track in the album’s sleeve notes.
- Ray Columbus & the Invaders released a 1965 single titled Till We Kissed (a different song title but noted in the same discussions), and The Guess Who released Till We Kissed as the B-side to Shakin’ All Over in 1965.

In sum, Where Have You Been (All My Life) is a 1962 soul ballad by Mann and Weil, first sung by Arthur Alexander and later covered by several notable artists.
