Watson (crater)

Watson is a lunar impact crater on the Moon’s far side, in the southern region. It lies southwest of the larger Lippmann crater and southeast of Fizeau.

The crater has a diameter of 64 kilometers; its depth is unknown. The rim is worn and rounded, giving the edge an uneven appearance. Inside the crater there are several small craterlets along the rim and interior. A merged pair of small craters lies along the southern edge of the floor, and there is a cup-shaped crater on the northeast part of the interior floor. It is not clear whether Watson once had a central peak.

Satellite craters

By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Watson. One example is Watson G, a crater about 34 kilometers in diameter located at approximately 63.3°S, 120.3°W.

Eponym

Watson is named after James C. Watson.
