Athletics at the 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 metres
The women's 100 metres at the 2000 Summer Olympics was held at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 22–23 September 2000. There were 84 competitors from 63 nations.
Format: In the first round, the top three finishers in each of ten heats plus the next two fastest overall advanced to the quarterfinals. The four quarterfinal heats sent the top four finishers to the semifinals, and the top four from each of the two semifinals moved on to the final.
Medal changes: The gold originally went to Marion Jones of the United States, but she admitted using performance-enhancing drugs before the Games and relinquished her medals; she was stripped by the IOC on 12 December 2007. Because Ekaterini Thanou of Greece had doping issues around the 2004 Games, the IOC initially did not immediately reallocate the medals. In late 2009, the IOC upgraded Tayna Lawrence of Jamaica to silver and Merlene Ottey of Jamaica to bronze, while keeping Thanou as a silver medallist and withholding the gold medal. No world or Olympic records were set during the event.
Medalists (after the 2009 decision): Ekaterini Thanou (Greece) – silver; Tayna Lawrence (Jamaica) – silver; Merlene Ottey (Jamaica) – bronze. Gold was not awarded.
Schedule: Heats and quarterfinals were held on 22 September; semifinals and the final were held on 23 September.
