Wassama Round House State Historic Park
Wassama Round House State Historic Park is in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Madera County, California, about five miles northwest of Oakhurst on California State Route 49. The park is a ceremonial gathering place for local Native Americans.
The current Wassama Round House is a reconstruction built in 1985 on the site of four earlier houses. The original round houses date back to before the 1860s and were central to spiritual and ceremonial life. The third round house, built in 1903, used parts from the earlier houses.
Gathering Day is the third Saturday of October, with dancing, crafts, and basket weaving demonstrations. The park also offers tours and special events.
In 2008, California proposed closing the park as part of a deficit reduction plan, but it remained open.
The park is California Historical Landmark No. 1001.
