Saltburn railway station
Saltburn railway station is on the Tees Valley Line in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire, England. It sits about 20 km east of Middlesbrough and has two platforms. The station is owned by Network Rail and run by Northern Trains. The station code is SLB.
History in brief
- Opened on 17 August 1861 as the terminus of the Stockton and Darlington Railway from Redcar; the building was completed in 1862.
- In the 1870s a second line was built towards Brotton, but it diverged a short distance west of Saltburn.
- Saltburn once had four platforms and many sidings for excursion trains. In 1974 the station was reduced in size, and the Zetland Hotel platform and most sidings were removed.
- The Zetland Hotel is now flats. A car park display and a rebuilt buffer stop mark Saltburn’s railway heritage.
- There were plans in 2006 for a Tees Valley Metro upgrade, but the project was shelved after 2010. Some improvements were made later, including in 2012.
Facilities and access
- The station is unstaffed.
- It has two acrylic shelters, bench seating, CCTV, a digital information screen, and a self-service ticket machine.
- Step-free access is available to both platforms.
Services
- Northern Trains run services along the Tees Valley Line, including to Bishop Auckland.
- On Sundays, there is typically one train per hour to Bishop Auckland.
- On Saturdays, TransPennine Express runs services to Manchester Airport and to York (about one train per day to each).
