Wake knot

The Wake knot, also called the Ormond knot, is an English heraldic knot used as a badge by the Wake family, who were lords of Bourne in Lincolnshire, and by the Butler family, Earls of Ormond. It resembles a Carrick bend knot, but the Wake knot shows the knot joining a rope and a strap. The knot appears on the coats of arms of Bourne Town Council and Bourne Academy in Lincolnshire. In the crest of the Isle of Ely County Council, a hand grasping a trident with an eel wrapped around it bears a Wake knot on the wrist, representing Hereward the Wake. The crest of No. 2 Squadron RAF also includes a Wake knot, and its motto is Hereward.
