WGL (1250 AM) is a Fort Wayne, Indiana radio station that broadcasts an all-news format. It is branded as “WGL Newsradio 1250 and 105.5” and also transmits on 105.5 FM through translator W288EI (added March 5, 2021). The station is owned by Brian R. Walsh. Studios are on Cass Street, and the transmitter is in Fort Wayne’s East Central neighborhood. WGL airs CBS News Radio with Associated Press news updates.

Sports and local programming: WGL covers local high school football and basketball, including Bishop Luers and Bishop Dwenger, starting in August 2021. University of Saint Francis football and basketball were added in fall 2022.

A brief history: WGL’s roots go back to March 25, 1925, when it was licensed as WHBJ for the Lauer Auto Company. It later became WCWK and then WGL. The station moved frequencies several times and increased power over the years. It was owned by several companies, including Westinghouse and the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, and the WGL call letters were tied to “Wayne’s Great Lady” in honor of the News-Sentinel’s publisher.

Format changes over the years included early talk programming and Rush Limbaugh, a switch to sports in 1998, a period with ESPN Radio, and later a shift to Fox Sports Radio. In 2003 it carried adult standards, with a simulcast on WGL-FM until 2010, then separate formats returned. In 2014, Adams Radio Group acquired the cluster and switched WGL to Fox Sports Radio. In March 2020, Adams suspended operations at WGL due to the COVID-19 downturn. A sale was announced to Brian R. Walsh, who acquired WGL and a nearby translator for $50,000.
