WBCT
WBCT (93.7 FM, "B-93") is a commercial country radio station in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is owned by iHeartMedia and broadcasts from studios at 77 Monroe Center in Downtown Grand Rapids. The station has been in the country format since July 24, 1992.
Its transmitter sits on the WWMT TV Tower near Gun Lake and runs 320,000 watts of power, one of the highest powers for FM in North America. The antenna sits about 800 feet up a 1,100-foot tower, giving WBCT a coverage area of roughly 25,000 square miles across 20 Michigan counties, and beyond to parts of Indiana and Wisconsin. It is a Class B "Superpower Grandfathered" station; under current rules a similar setup could only use about 20,000 watts.
WBCT also broadcasts in HD Radio and carries The Nashville Channel on its HD2 subchannel.
History: The station began in October 1951 as WJEF-FM, simulcasting WJEF (AM). In 1960 it increased power to 500,000 watts and changed formats several times, including MOR, beautiful music, automated Top 40, AC as "Mellow 93," then classic hits and classic rock. In 1992, after staff changes, the station switched to country and became WBCT “B-93,” quickly ranking at the top of the market. The original program director was Lee Cory, and the first morning show team was Neal Dionne and Reese Rickards, who worked there for 22 years before being let go in a budget cut.
