Mandalay University
Mandalay University, also called the University of Mandalay, is a public university in Mandalay, Myanmar. It is one of sixteen autonomous universities under the Ministry of Education and is the second oldest university in Myanmar. It is the oldest and largest university in Upper Myanmar, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in liberal arts, sciences, and law.
History
- Founded in 1925 as Mandalay College, part of Rangoon University.
- Closed during World War II (1942) and reopened in 1947.
- Became an independent university in 1958, with regional colleges joining as affiliates.
- In 1964, the focus shifted to liberal arts, sciences, and law; the medical faculty became the Institute of Medicine, Mandalay.
- Renamed Mandalay Arts and Science University (MASU) in 1978, and back to Mandalay University in 1988.
What it offers
- About 20 departments offering undergraduate degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Law) and postgraduate degrees (Master’s and Doctorates).
- Previously ran a Center of Excellence for selective undergraduate admission; today it continues to offer broad bachelor’s and advanced degrees.
- The university is a partner in CHINLONE, an Erasmus+ project led by the University of Bologna to modernize Myanmar’s higher education and encourage international collaboration.
Library and resources
- The university has a Central Library and 21 departmental libraries, with hundreds of thousands of books in English and Myanmar.
- A new library building was opened in 2013.
Rankings and affiliations
- In 2017, a national survey ranked Mandalay University first among arts and sciences universities in Myanmar for research, teaching quality, student welfare, faculty quality, and management.
- The university is affiliated with the ASEAN University Network (AUN).
Recent events
- On 28 March 2025, a major earthquake caused a fire and significant damage to the campus, including the main building and several facilities. Many examination papers were destroyed, and there were casualties.
Location and size
- Located in Mahaaungmye, Mandalay. The university serves thousands of students and has a large academic staff across its departments.
