Virginia State Route 420
State Route 420 (SR 420) is an unsigned primary state highway in Virginia, entirely within the city of Alexandria. It runs 2.75 miles (4.43 km) from I-395 on the west to SR 7 (King Street) on the east. The road is named Seminary Road from I-395 to Quaker Lane and Janneys Lane from Quaker Lane to SR 7.
SR 420 begins at a large interchange with I-395 and continues west as Seminary Road toward Bailey’s Crossroads. Just east of the interchange, the route crosses the northern end of SR 401 (Van Dorn Street), with access to SR 401 via two right-in/right-out intersections at Kenmore Avenue. The highway starts as a four-lane divided road, then becomes a four-lane undivided street, and later narrows to a two-lane road with a center left-turn lane after passing Inova Alexandria Hospital.
The route passes the Virginia Theological Seminary just west of Quaker Lane, where Quaker Lane heads north as SR 402. East of Quaker Lane, SR 420 becomes Janneys Lane, a two-lane road that passes north of the Gerald R. Ford Jr. House and ends at SR 7 (King Street).
SR 420 was assigned to its current location in the mid-1980s. The Seminary Road portion was once numbered SR 716 while it was in Fairfax County before Alexandria annexed the area in the 1950s. The entire route is in Alexandria.
