Vexillum sanguisuga
Vexillum sanguisuga, commonly known as the branded mitre, is a small sea snail in the ribbed miter family (Costellariidae).
What it looks like:
- Size: shell up to about 39 mm long
- Shape: cylindrically fusiform with a high spire and six whorls
- Texture: finely striated across the shell and with long, rib-like ridges that are often granulated
- Opening: outer lip slightly concave, aperture is narrow
- Color: shell ranges from blueish white to yellowish; the ribs are typically blood-red, with the base and apex sometimes brownish black
- Inner feature: the columella (inner column) has four folds
Distribution:
- Found in the Indo-West Pacific region, including the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and parts of Australia (Queensland and Western Australia).
