Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary
Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary is a small protected area in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu, India. It covers about 0.38 square kilometers and was established in 1977. The sanctuary includes several irrigation tanks around Thirupattur, such as Periya Kollukudi Patti, Chinna Kollukudi Patti, and Vettangudi Patti. Most rain falls between October and December with about 330–390 mm from the northeast monsoon. The wet basins host over 8,000 winter migratory birds from around 217 species, many from Europe and North Asia. It is a breeding site for grey heron, darter, spoonbill, white ibis, Asian openbill stork, and night heron, and also hosts native endangered birds like painted stork, little cormorant, little egret, intermediate egret, cattle egret, common teal, Indian spot-billed duck, pintail, and flamingos. It is classified as IUCN category IV, a habitat/species management area.
