Urimai Oonjaladugiradhu
Urimai Oonjaladugiradhu (Rights Are Swinging) is a 1992 Indian Tamil drama film written and directed by Visu. It stars Visu along with Ramesh Aravind, Major Sundarrajan, Kishmu, Kasthuri, Vadivukkarasi and Sangeetha. The film released on 14 August 1992 and did not do well at the box office.
The story follows Shanmugam, his wife Vadivu, and their three children—Uma, Mala, and Narayanan. Shanmugam deeply respects his elder brother Sundarrajan, who becomes a widower after his wife dies in childbirth. Sundarrajan contemplates giving his baby daughter to an orphanage, but Shanmugam and Vadivu rescue her and raise her as their eldest daughter, Uma. The family keeps this secret from the children.
Gomathi, the younger sister of Sundarrajan and Shanmugam, was expelled from their home years ago for marrying Kamalanathan, a marriage broker. Meena is the couple’s only daughter. Kamalanathan is financially struggling, and the family works hard to make ends meet. Uma and Meena are close friends, and both work at a beach resort where the owner has a wife in the United States. Uma also works as a receptionist. James, the resort manager, is kind and falls in love with Uma.
The elders disapprove of love marriages, but Uma stands firm, hoping to marry James with their blessing. To keep the peace, Sundarrajan and Shanmugam arrange marriages for Mala and Narayanan. Mala marries Sanjay, while Narayanan plans an arranged marriage with a girl’s family’s help.
On Mala’s wedding day, Kamalanathan reveals Uma’s romance to Mala’s in-laws and exposes Narayanan’s plan, seeking revenge for past grievances. The resort owner’s wife learns of her husband’s affair with Meena, fires Meena, and returns to the US. Meena becomes pregnant, and doctors warn against abortion. Gomathi is distressed and commits suicide, prompting Kamalanathan to realize his mistakes and try to fix things at Shanmugam’s home. Mala returns to her in-laws after doubts about Uma’s virginity arise, and Narayanan faces trouble with his wife and in-laws. Uma helps reconcile Narayanan’s marriage with Meena’s support.
James finally reveals his love to his parents, who agree to the marriage if it happens within two weeks. Uma waits for the elders’ approval, but they remain stubborn. On the day James arrives with his parents at the register office, Kamalanathan attempts to persuade the elders. Meena goes into labor, and she asks Kamalanathan to first help Uma. He complies and then reveals a crucial truth: Uma is actually Sundarrajan’s daughter, raised by Shanmugam. Uma already knew this from school but kept it secret to protect her family’s feelings. She forgives them and agrees to marry James.
Sundarrajan and Shanmugam finally approve, and Uma and James marry. Tragically, Meena dies in childbirth. Uma decides to adopt Meena’s baby and raise it as her own, with James’ blessing.
The film’s music was composed by Shankar–Ganesh, with lyrics by Vairamuthu. A reviewer from The Indian Express called it a well-conceived family drama, though Kasthuri’s role was noted as not given enough importance.
