Georgia State Election Board
The Georgia State Election Board is a state government agency that creates and enforces rules to protect the fairness, legality, and orderly conduct of elections in Georgia. It is led by Chairman John Fervier and is based in Atlanta.
Key points:
- In 2024, Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 189, removing the Georgia Secretary of State from the board and making the board a separate entity with its own budget.
- In October 2024, the Georgia Supreme Court ordered that the newly created election rules could not be enforced yet.
- A 2023 law changed how members are chosen: the chair is elected by the General Assembly; the Senate and the House can each elect one member; each political party can nominate a member to be appointed by the Governor. No person who is a member of the General Assembly may serve on the board.
