Urbain Johnson
Urbain Johnson (1824-1917) was a farmer and Liberal politician in New Brunswick. He represented Kent County in the Legislative Assembly in 1869-1870, 1874-1882, and 1895-1908. Born in Saint-Louis-de-Kent, he was the son of Simon Johnson and Geneviève Vautour, and his family came from Scottish immigrants who settled among the Acadians near Chaleur Bay. He married Nathalie Leblanc in 1856. He won a 1869 by-election after Owen McInerney joined the Legislative Council, but was defeated in 1870. He opposed the Common Schools Act, which banned religious instruction in public schools. He took part in Acadian conventions in 1880 and 1881, and suggested Acadians adopt different holidays and symbols from other French Canadians. He also served as a justice of the peace and a militia officer. He retired from politics in 1908 and died in 1917 at age 93.
