1978 UEFA European Under-21 Championship
The 1978 UEFA European Under-21 Championship took place from 8 March to 31 May 1978, with 24 national teams taking part. The teams were split into eight groups, and the group winners advanced to a knockout stage played over two legs. There was no separate finals tournament or a third-place match.
Yugoslavia won the title, claiming their first U-21 championship, and East Germany were runners-up. Across 62 matches, 199 goals were scored (about 3.21 per game).

The qualifying groups were organized similarly to the 1978 FIFA World Cup qualification, with some changes due to the absence of certain nations.
