University of Sulaymaniyah
The University of Sulaimani is a public university in Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It was founded in 1968 by Professor Dr. Mohammed Salih Beg and reopened in 1992 after changes during the Ba’ath era. The main campus is in Sulaymaniyah, with satellite campuses in Khanaqin, Kalar, Halabja, and Chamchamal. The university educates about 25,000 students each year, including around 23,000 undergraduates and 2,300 postgraduates, supported by about 3,000 staff.
It offers a wide range of programs across fields such as medicine, engineering, science, humanities, law, arts, physical education, and political science, with degrees from bachelor’s to PhD. Originally, it had five faculties—Medicine, Engineering, Science, Agriculture, and Arts—but has since expanded to include many more. In the 1980s, the Ba’ath regime moved the institution to Erbil and renamed it University of Salahaddin; it was reopened in Sulaymaniyah in 1992 by Kurdish scholars and the local community. Today, it is one of the oldest and leading universities in Kurdistan and has played a key role in the region’s higher education.
