United Arab Emirates Internet Exchange
UAE-IX, short for United Arab Emirates Internet Exchange, is a carrier- and data center-neutral Internet Exchange Point in Dubai. It connects global networks, network operators and content providers across the GCC region, helping localize Internet traffic.
Founded in 2012, UAE-IX runs on a fully redundant switching platform located in two Dubai data centers, Datamena and Equinix. It was initiated by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and is fully managed by DE-CIX. Since its start, UAE-IX has become the biggest IXP in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by number of participating networks and traffic.
There are more than 10 carriers that can provide connectivity to UAE-IX, and four partners offer remote-peering, letting networks connect without physically being at the exchange. Originally, connections started at 1 Gbit/s or 10 Gbit/s, and later a 100 Gbit/s option was added as traffic grew.
UAE-IX has around 80 regional and global customers. The exchange surpassed 100 Gbit/s peak traffic in September 2018. It is located at Datamena, a data center in Dubai Production City (IMPZ), and at Equinix in Dubai, using redundant network switches to ensure reliability. UAE-IX is supported by the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and remains one of the region’s largest IXPs.
