Under Stars
Under Stars is the fourth studio album by Scottish singer-songwriter Amy Macdonald. It was released on 17 February 2017 and runs about 39 minutes. Recording took place from October 2015 to August 2016 at RAK Studios in London. The album’s genre is pop rock/soft rock and was released by Melodramatic, Mercury and Vertigo. Producers include Cam Blackwood, Tim Bran, Roy Kerr, Andrew Britton, Ash Howes, and Mikey Rowe.
Macdonald began writing for the album in early 2014 and performed four new songs in May 2014. She finished the songwriting in 2015 and started recording in October 2015, finishing in August 2016. She has said the project took two and a half years, the longest she has spent on an album, but she was glad it received the care it deserved.
The lead single, "Dream On," came out on 6 January 2017 and was particularly successful in Europe, reaching No. 28 in Scotland and charting in Belgium and Switzerland. The second single, "Automatic," was released on 24 March 2017, with a music video released on 17 March. The third single, "Down by the Water," was released on 11 July 2017; an acoustic version had been released as a promo in late 2016. A super deluxe box set was also issued.
Commercially, the album did well, reaching number one in Switzerland and No. 2 in the UK, Scotland and Germany, with top-10 placements in Austria and New Zealand. Critics gave mixed to positive reviews; the London Evening Standard rated it 3 out of 5 stars, calling it a tuneful collection that stays true to Macdonald’s style.
